PMGC 2020: Nova Esports win the first title
Overview
The inaugural PUBG Mobile Global Championship ended in Dubai, UAE, in January 2021. Nova Esports of China won the title with 319 points in the Grand Finals, after finishing eighth in the league stage with 366 points.
Suk of 4 Angry Men took the MVP award. The event was the first edition of the season-ending world championship for PUBG Mobile.
Nova took $712,500 from a $2,000,000 prize pool, with 4 Angry Men second. The Grand Finals MVP award carried a $10,000 prize.
The league stage began with twenty-four teams in three groups, playing four weeks of weekday matches and Super Weekends, with only Super Weekend points counting toward the league table. The top sixteen teams from that table moved on to the Dubai finals.
The Dubai finals featured sixteen teams across twenty-nine matches on four matchdays from 21 to 26 January 2021. Nova Esports finished first with 319 points, ahead of Four Angry Men on 294 and ZEUS ESPORTS on 292.
Two MVP awards of $10,000 each went to 4 Angry Men players, with 33Svan taking the league award and Suk taking the finals award. Suk also took the finals Gunslinger award, while Ryzen of Bigetron RA took the league Combat Medic and Grenade Master awards.
English commentary ran on YouTube and Twitch under the PUBG Mobile Esports and PUBG Mobile names, with regional streams in Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay, Hindi, Nepali, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, French, Turkish, Burmese and Chinese, among others.
Natus Vincere finished fourth on 241 points, level with Bigetron RA on 241, while Konina Power took sixth on 239, Team Secret seventh on 226 and Klas Digital Athletics eighth on 221. A7 Esports finished ninth on 214, Secret Jin tenth on 194, RRQ Athena eleventh on 180, Futbolist twelfth on 178, Aerowolf LIMAX thirteenth on 161, POWER888 KPS fourteenth on 155, A1 eSports fifteenth on 146 and Abrupt Slayers sixteenth on 128.
The Dubai finals pool stood at $1,200,000 inside the $2,000,000 event pool, and the published per-team figures are event totals across the league and the finals, not finals-only prizes.
Three invited sides joined the field, with Bigetron RA entering as PMWL East champions, Futbolist as PMWL West champions and Elites United Team on the host country invite, alongside qualifiers from the PMPL regions, the PEL, the Japan League, the Street Challenge and the qualifier event.
Two matchdays were deferred by technical issues before play resumed, which stretched the finals from the planned 24 matches to 29.
